Russell T. Davies addresses his controversial Doctor Who departure

Russell T. Davies recently revealed the real reason behind his departure from Doctor Who. Speaking exclusively to The Mirror at the Attitude Awards in London, the showrunner said, “Time to move on, that’s all.” Davies confirmed that no behind-the-scenes tension or creative disagreements influenced his decision to leave.

The showrunner first revived Doctor Who in 2005 before returning in 2023. He announced his departure on Instagram on June 10, 2026. His exit came after the BBC revealed the cancellation of a planned 2026 Christmas special.

Many fans had connected his departure to reports that Disney ended its partnership with the show. Some viewers believed conflicts behind the camera forced Davies out. However, Davies made clear his decision was far less dramatic than fans assumed.

Davies now has several exciting projects ahead of him. He is developing a stage adaptation of his Channel 4 drama It’s A Sin. He shared his enthusiasm about the dance show, saying, “It’s in Manchester in February, then it goes to Cardiff in June, then it’s Sadler’s Wells in the autumn.” He added, “So it keeps launching. I feel excited.”

The cancelled Christmas special also sparked significant fan backlash. Davies previously hinted at the episode’s storyline in Doctor Who Magazine last December. He wrote at the time, “Next December, I’ll be here to trumpet and toot about the 2026 Christmas Special.” However, in his departure post, he stated, “There was no script, I never wrote it, and no actor was ever approached to play the next Doctor.”

Fans criticized Davies for giving them unrealistic expectations about the special. One fan responded, “To say you didn’t even write it when we’ve all been led to believe something was going to be waiting under the Christmas tree, that was not fair at all.”
