Sarah Paulson has revealed the American Horror Story season she likes the least. However, one particular season did not work for her. Ryan Murphy, who created the series, strongly disagrees with her take.
Entertainment Weekly recently asked Paulson about the characters she has portrayed on American Horror Story. The 51-year-old named American Horror Story: Roanoke as her least favorite season. Paulson played Shelby Miller and Audrey Tindall in the 2016 installment. She said, “I don’t like it! It’s not for me! I like a lot of things about it, but that one wasn’t for me. I don’t give a s— about that season. Sorry!”
Released in 2016, Roanoke follows a couple who move into a farmhouse in North Carolina. Strange events soon make their new home a terrifying place. The season initially presents the story as a documentary called My Roanoke Nightmare. It later shifts into a reality series that brings the show’s subjects back to the property. The unusual structure made the season different from the anthology’s earlier installments.
Ryan Murphy’s defense revives a longstanding Roanoke debate
Ryan Murphy quickly came to the season’s defense after Sarah Paulson’s comments. He responded to an Entertainment Weekly interview clip with “JUSTICE FOR ROANOKE.” Murphy also revealed that Roanoke is his favorite season and praised Paulson’s performance. He wrote, “My favorite season, Sarah’s least favorite… but she was so good in it!”
The disagreement between the two goes back several years. Murphy said he and Paulson have had “arguments” about the season. The actress previously discussed her feelings about Roanoke during a 2021 appearance on the Awards Chatter podcast. She said she felt “underwhelmed” by the overall experience and wished she could have asked the program creator to let her sit out the season.
Paulson eventually took a break from American Horror Story after Season 9. She returned for Season 10 before sitting out Seasons 11 and 12. She is now back for Season 13, with Murphy teasing that she will play “six or seven roles.”
