Spider-Man 4 Is More Important to the MCU’s X-Men Than Avengers: Doomsday

A new rumor has sparked speculation that Spider-Man: Brand New Day is more important to the MCU plans for the X-Men than Avengers: Doomsday. There are many theories regarding how Marvel Comics‘ most popular superhero team will be introduced into the shared setting. However, the latest rumor involves a character tied to the Mutant community.

Spider-Man 4 Is More Important to the MCU’s X-Men Than Avengers: Doomsday

Many theories regarding Spider-Man: Brand New Day involve introducing Mutants into the MCU. Some are based around the mystery character played by Sadie Sink being Jean Grey. Earlier MCU series like Ms. Marvel and Wonder Man teased Mutants existing, but don’t feature any characters normally associated with the X-Men.

However, an interview with actress Liza Colón-Zayas inspired one possibility. While unable to name her character, Colón-Zayas confirmed she plays a detective. She also said the movie will present “a darker, deeper Spider-Man“.

This could tease several Spider-Man characters, particularly Jean DeWolff; a Detective in the NYPD who befriended Spider-Man in the comics. However, some theorize it could reference the more obscure Delores Ramirez. Introduced into the X-Men comics in 2020, Ramirez was a CIA Agent assigned to an anti-Mutant task force. However, she soon began passing information on to the Mutants she was meant to be monitoring. It’s possible she could fill the same role in the MCU.

Regardless, this would tie-in to the increased role the Department of Damage Control will play in Brand New Day. Once responsible for reconstruction after superhuman incidents, the DODC are now hunting and imprisoning unregistered superhumans. This mimics the activities of the American government in the X-Men comics. Throw in the movie’s core conflict of Peter Parker being fearful he’s mutating, and there is considerable evidence that Mutants are being formally introduced as part of Brand New Day.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday have very different X-Men jobs

The idea of Spider-Man: Brand New Day setting up Mutants in the MCU is largely speculation. However, it is born out by what we know of their role in Avengers: Doomsday. The trailers and cast lists have confirmed that many actors from the Fox X-Men franchise are returning for the next Avengers movie. It is also speculated that the film will set up a fresh start for the MCU, if not a full reset of the cinematic continuity.

Given that, it is easy to see the two movies filling two different roles. Spider-Man: Brand New Day could be used to introduce Mutants and the origins of the X-Men to the MCU. This would also add a double-meaning to the title, with a “new day” for both Peter Parker and the MCU. In contrast, Avengers: Doomsday could be used to give the original cinematic X-Men one last hurrah and noble deaths to secure the survival of Mutants in a brave new world.
