Spider-Man: Brand New Day marks a dramatic shift in Marvel‘s storytelling. Tom Holland‘s fourth Spider-Man movie is also a blueprint that the MCU‘s X-Men can follow.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day represents a new chapter in Peter Parker’s MCU journey. The name quite literally represents what’s happening to the character, it’s a new day for Spider-Man as he enters a new chapter of his life. He’s no longer the innocent teenager from Spider-Man: Homecoming.
In Brand New Day, Peter is four years older after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home. He’s moved on from high school to college. Further, Peter confronts depression and loneliness as he misses his girlfriend and best friend.
Spider-Man has grown up before our very eyes, which is an important thing to note. Fans have watched Holland’s character evolve for over 10 years. It’s one of the main reasons why the MCU’s Spider-Man has resonated with so many people. It’s also why Marvel should continue down this path with other characters.
Marvel’s next generation should grow with viewers like Tom Holland’s Spider-Man
Marvel is in a reset phase. Last year, Marvel rebooted the Fantastic Four and brought those characters into the MCU. The studio is currently building toward Avengers: Secret Wars, which, according to Kevin Feige, will “represent a beginning” as it says goodbye to the multiverse in favor of a “streamlined, simplified, single universe.”
The biggest reboot will be in a few years when the X-Men enter the MCU. Marvel is looking at younger stars to play the X-Men. Take Sadie Sink, who is rumored to be playing Jean Grey. Sink is a budding 24-year-old star.
With younger stars, fans have the chance to grow with the characters over the course of multiple movies. That’s not to say Marvel won’t cast established, older actors for characters like Professor X and Magneto. However, casting emerging talent and developing them into stars is how Marvel can succeed in the future.
Marvel needs to return to the era where it made stars, not hired them. Look at how the MCU transformed Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans into international stars. The same can be said for Holland, who is as A-list as it gets. Marvel could have easily rebooted Spider-Man after No Way Home. Instead, they stuck with Holland and aged the character. The risk will likely pay off, as Spider-Man: Brand New Day is projected for historic box office results.
Marvel’s future depends on the younger generation. It’s time to elevate young talent into stars.
