Lin-Manuel Miranda revealed that he came shockingly close to joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Nearly 10 years after Spider-Man: Homecoming’s release, the songwriter-actor opened up about an opportunity that never materialized. In a recent interview, Miranda said he decided not to join the Marvel film despite being excited by its story.
What MCU villain role did Lin-Manuel Miranda turn down?
In a recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Miranda opened up for the first time about Marvel Studios offering him a role. In Spider-Man: Homecoming, Manuel was offered the role of Adrian Toomes, better known as the Vulture. However, the role eventually went to Michael Keaton, whose performance became one of the film’s solid elements.
Recalling the film’s major twist, the Grammy winner opened up about his phone call with Kevin Feige, the President of Marvel Studios. Miranda remembered the president saying, “‘And they get to the door, and it’s her dad.’” He said that he reacted with surprise, saying, “I went ‘OH!’ over the phone.”
According to Miranda, Feige later told him that his reply reassured him that the reveal would work with audiences.
Although he loved the script, the timing ultimately prevented him from accepting the offer. Moreover, Miranda explained that filming was ready to begin immediately after he finished his nearly 18-month run in Hamilton, making him exhausted and eager to take a break.
“I would really like this. I really like these movies, but I would like to stay married, so I cannot do this,” the 46-year-old said while explaining his move. However, looking back, he also admitted that he believes he “would have been deeply miscast” as the Vulture.
Meanwhile, Miranda praised Michael Keaton’s performance and said Marvel cast the right actor for the role. “Michael Keaton was perfect, they found the same who they needed,” he said, adding that he has “no regrets” because he badly needed a holiday after Hamilton.
Currently, Lin-Manuel Miranda has no new Disney-backed project to announce. He remains interested in creating a stage adaptation of Encanto when he has the time.
