Spider-Man: MCU Could Be Adapting This Controversial Storyline After Brand New Day

Marvel may be planning to adapt a controversial comics storyline in the MCU following Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man: Brand New Day, also known as Spider-Man 4, will be released in United States theaters this summer. Directed by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ Destin Daniel Cretton, the movie will once again see Tom Holland reprise his role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man.

Following Brand New Day are Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, the former of which is being released this December and the latter of which arrives in 2027. It has not been confirmed that Holland will appear in either of those movies at this time, though there’s been much speculation that he’ll show up in some capacity.

What Spider-Man storyline could the MCU be adapting after Brand New Day?

What comes next for Spider-Man after that in the MCU remains to be seen. According to scooper Alex Perez of The Cosmic Circus, Marvel is considering Spider-Man team-up movies with Deadpool or Mephisto, though another possible route that could be taken would be adapting the Clone Saga.

“There’s one more character, who pops up in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, whose role I hope remains at the level of the Tinkerer in Spider-Man: Homecoming, because if it goes even remotely close to a certain Spider-Man storyline from the 90s which Spidey fans have dubbed the worst storyline/saga ever, we might start seeing double.”

While Perez doesn’t mention anything more specific than that, there has recently been a flood of rumors that the Jackal will appear in Brand New Day. In Marvel Comics, the Jackal is responsible for making Spider-Man clones Ben Reilly and Kaine Parker, which would explain the “seeing double” line.

The Clone Saga was controversial largely because it replaced Peter Parker with Ben Reilly as the regular Spider-Man for a good amount of time, though the decision to resurrect the Green Goblin, among other plot points, were also highly discussed and criticized.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrives on July 31, 2026.
