Following the Stranger Things Season 5 finale, fans still have a lot of questions left about the show. One major question is why there wasn’t a scene with Hopper and Joyce realizing that Vecna/Henry Creel was someone they knew from high school. This information was actually first revealed in Netflix‘s award-winning stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which explored Vecna’s origins.
Why didn’t Hopper and Joyce address their past with Vecna in Stranger Things Season 5?
In a recent interview with Variety, when asked if there was ever a scene where Hopper and Joyce realized their connection with Vecna, series creators Matt and Ross Duffer explained that they decided against including a scene like that in Season 5 because they didn’t want to make the final season confusing for people who haven’t seen the play. However, they’re sure that Hopper and Joyce did have that kind of conversation off-screen.
“Yeah, I’m sure there was. We had a walk a fine line with the play — we don’t want to frustrate, because so much of our audience is unable to see it,” Ross Duffer said. “To have them start talking about it would have been confusing in the context of someone who hasn’t seen the play. But I’m sure they did have that conversation.”
Matt Duffer added, “We really needed the final season to be exactly as it would have been without the play. The play is Henry’s backstory after he’s been infected by the Mind Flayer. But this is how the season was going to play out regardless.”
Stranger Things Season 5 stars Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Noah Schnapp, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Natalia Dyer, Joe Keery, Charlie Heaton, Sadie Sink, Maya Hawke, Priah Ferguson, Cara Buono, and Brett Gelman. It also featured the return of Season 4 cast members Jamie Campbell Bower as Vecna/One/Henry Creel and Amybeth McNulty as Vickie. They were also joined by new cast members, including Terminator vet Linda Hamilton as Dr. Kay, Nell Fisher as Holly Wheeler, Jake Connelly as Derek Turnbow, and Alex Breaux as Lt. Akers.
