Street Fighter 2: Fans Think Sequel Could Still Happen Despite Bad Reviews & Box Office, Here’s Why

Fans are still keeping their hopes high for Street Fighter 2. This comes after Street Fighter’s recent release and performance at the box office. Although the film received bad reviews and its worldwide box office was disappointing as well, here’s why fans are still hoping to get a second installment.

Street Fighter was released in the United States by Paramount Pictures on October 16, 2026. It received mixed reviews from critics worldwide, holding a rotten 42% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes alongside a 79% general audience score. On a reported budget of $82 million, the film has only made $51 million at the box office worldwide so far this past weekend.

However, fans still believe a sequel could happen. As @Tekkaman_Raiden posted on X, “51 million over 3 days is pretty decent.” Meanwhile, @MascotRay tweeted, “This movie is way better than critics made it out to be, as usual. Just have fun??”

Another user, @rshah2611, also defended the movie, writing, “For fans of the games, it’s a great movie; for fans of the old movie, it’s a great movie, and for neither, it’s a cheesy, funny, amazing 2 hours of entertainment. What’s not to love…”

Additionally, studios have greenlit sequels to bigger box office bombs than this one, so it’s not impossible for Street Fighter 2 to still happen.

What happens at the end of the new Street Fighter movie?

During the tournament’s chaotic final confrontation at the end of Street Fighter, Ryu surrenders to his inner darkness, turning into Evil Ryu. His gi goes black, and his eyes turn red as he gears up to battle and knock out the menacing Akuma. Consumed by darkness, Evil Ryu attacks his own friends, Ken, Chun-Li, and Dan.

Ken unlocks his own full power and uses a flaming Hadoken to knock some sense into Ryu, breaking him out of his rampage and rendering him unconscious. After a brief, lighthearted sing-along to “What’s Up?” by 4 Non Blondes, the friends then reconcile.

While the dust settles, Bison and his forces escape, taking the incapacitated Akuma with them to drain his psycho power instead. Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, and Dan hitchhike on a rural road and are then picked up by Guile and Dhalsim, uniting the crew to hunt down Bison. Meanwhile, Bison travels to a tropical island to recruit Sagat, setting up the antagonists for a sequel.
