Superhero Hype Cosplay: Jean Grey as Marvel Girl
Note From the Editor: This week, Superhero Hype’s cosplay correspondent, Ashlynne Dae, is sharing a blast from the X-Men’s past. Her latest creation is one of Jean Grey’s most famous costumes as Marvel Girl from the Silver Age of comics. More recently, Jean started wearing this outfit again in Johnathan Hickman’s House of X and X-Men. It seems to be one of Jean’s favorite outfits, and one of Ashlynne’s as well.
I think by now you all know that Jean Grey is my favorite X-Men character. That’s why I have made a lot of her costumes.
In fact I will probably never be done making her costumes. She just has so many!
Nor am I ever one to turn down the opportunity for a good old fashioned retro costume. I made this Marvel Girl cosplay about 5 years ago just after I had made my first Phoenix suit.
It sat in my storage collecting dust, having never been properly shot. So I decided to bust it out and make some updates. I added a new belt, gloves, boots, and made a new mask for it.
I suppose without all that it’s just a Kelly green mini dress. But I wanted all the yellow components to match.
I do love Jean, and her character progression and growth over the years. Yet something about this very 60’s retro design hits differently for me.
Maybe it calls me back to a time in her life that was just a little less complicated before the Phoenix Force came along.
Whatever the reason, Jean seems to share my affection for this old style as well, having recently gone back to it in the current X-Men books.
It really does not have any sort of protection for her exposed legs. But since I will not be fighting in it, there’s no reason for me not to indulge in a little Silver Age nostalgia.
As Jean once said, “I started as Marvel Girl, so that’s how I’ll finish.” But I doubt I’ll be finished with Jean any time soon!
