Sweet Tooth Creators Discuss Bringing the Comic To Life in a New Featurette
A few weeks ago, the trailer for Netflix’s Sweet Tooth adaptation gave fans the first look at the show’s wildly imaginative post-apocalyptic landscape. But as anyone who’s read the comic knows, there’s also a profound story behind the stunning visuals. Now, Netflix has released a new featurette for the series where the producers explain how they brought this story from the page to the screen.
Sweet Tooth boasts some pretty impressive behind-the-scenes talent, including executive producers Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey. According to the former Iron Man star, he and his wife were attracted to the “incredible, emotional breadth of the storytelling” in Jeff Lemire’s original graphic novel, which imagines a future where a mysterious pandemic gives rise to a new race of animal-human hybrids. One of its earliest fans was Jim Mickle, who now serves as a director and co-showrunner on the Netflix series. Mickle particularly admired “Lemire’s voice and the way that he brings so much of himself” to the story. Thankfully, Lemire sounds happy with what they’ve accomplished so far.
“As soon as I heard how in line [Mickle’s] vision was with what I originally created, I felt like it was in really good hands,” said Lemire.
Co-showrunner Beth Schwartz also appears in the video to praise the work of the show’s art department and costume design team, remarking that they nailed the “hopefulness” that the creators were aiming for. But as Downey notes, this contrasts somewhat with the “darker” nature of Lemire’s books. Regardless, Susan Downey insists that the series stays true to what made the original comics resonate with fans.
“We felt we could really hold onto the themes, but make it a more enjoyable place,” said Downey.
“They really are stories of hope in the midst of darkness,” added Lemire. “I think those are the stories we need more than ever now.”
Sweet Tooth premieres on Netflix on June 4.
