Things are finally moving on for The Last of Us Season 3, and fans have a solid reason to get excited. The show’s villain has confirmed she’s getting ready to head back into production, hinting that filming for the next one of HBO’s hit series is right around the corner.
Kaitlyn Dever gears up to begin The Last of Us Season 3 filming
The intense finale of Season 2 left viewers on a massive cliffhanger, with Abby confronting Ellie in a Seattle theater. The screen cut to black before their confrontation resolved, and the final moments jumped back to “Seattle Day 1,” showing a major narrative shift. Season 3 will fully embrace this new perspective.
Kaitlyn Dever recently confirmed to Deadline that she is preparing to begin filming. “I’m getting mentally and physically prepped right now. I go up in a couple days, actually, to start prep over there. I’m so excited to kind of take on a much bigger role in the season,” she quipped. This aligns with the story’s structure from the video game The Last of Us Part II, where the point of view shifts to Abby, exploring her backstory and motivations.
Dever added, “The fans are really going to like it, I think, the shifting perspective onto Abby, getting some more context onto her storyline and going back in time with this season. So, I’m very excited for the fans to see it.”
The actor’s comments are the clearest hint at The Last of Us Season 3 production timeline. Her confirmation that physical production is starting soon provides the most tangible update since HBO Chairman Casey Bloys confirmed a planned 2027 release window. This filming start follows co-creator Craig Mazin’s hints that Season 3’s story would allow for a different pace and potentially more episodes than Season 2.
Furthermore, returning cast members are expected to include Bella Ramsey as Ellie, Isabela Merced as Dina, and Gabriel Luna as Tommy. Now, fans gotta wait for the official The Last of Us Season 3 release date.
