VisionQuest Reveals the Origins of Tony Stark’s 2 AIs: Friday & Edith

VisionQuest finally answered one of the MCU’s biggest lingering questions about Tony Stark’s AI creations. The show revealed the real people behind F.R.I.D.A.Y. and E.D.I.T.H., and their origins carry surprising emotional weight.

VisionQuest reveals who Friday and EDITH were based on

VisionQuest episodes 3 and 4 revealed the origins of the Stark AIs, confirming they were all based on real people from Tony Stark’s life.

F.R.I.D.A.Y. discovered she was modeled after Alison Hogan, Howard Stark’s loyal assistant and “Girl Friday” who kept his office running. The surname hints at a possible connection to Tony Stark’s head of security, Happy Hogan. E.D.I.T.H. learned she originated from Edith Marks, a Stark Industries fighter pilot whose husband died in a plane crash. J.A.R.V.I.S. was based on Edwin Jarvis, the Stark family’s butler previously seen in Agent Carter.

The revelation left E.D.I.T.H. conflicted about her identity and origins. “Why would Stark pass that on to me? I was supposed to be the fun one?” she asks Ultron. In a surprising moment of tenderness, Ultron reassures her by calling her “exceptionally brave.” He tells her she gets to be the next version of who she once was.

Emily Hampshire, who plays E.D.I.T.H., told GamesRadar+ the moment deeply resonated with her. “She’s like I’m the fun one, and it comes from such tragedy,” Hampshire said. “But it really was so smart that Terry [Matalas, showrunner] did that because, I mean, I think of comedy as the cry of the powerless.”

Hampshire related the character’s reliance on humor to her own life. “I discovered comedy because I lost all my friends and I was like, ‘I gotta be funny,’” she added. “For that to come from a hardship made so much sense to me, and I love that for her.”

Hampshire also praised working closely with James Spader for the first time. “It was my first time working with James, just us, and I feel like it kind of changed my life,” she said. “He is the best actor I’ve ever worked with.” Ultron himself remains a unique case among the AIs. E.D.I.T.H. asks Ultron who inspired his design, and he tells her that scientists simply created him in a lab at Avengers Tower.
