‘We’re Screwed’: David Ayer’s Suicide Squad DCU Canon Status Gets Brutal James Gunn Response

James Gunn has explained David Ayer‘s Suicide Squad canon status, pointing to the complications that it could create for the DC Universe. The filmmaker discussed the subject while addressing the continuity of the franchise and how its characters’ past experiences could fit into the new cinematic universe.

During the newly released debut episode of The Suicide Squad: Is It Canon? The Official Podcast, Gunn was asked whether Harley Quinn’s relationship with Rick Flag and Boomerang in the 2021 movie was established from Ayer’s 2016 film. Gunn replied, “I don’t think it needs to be. See, that’s the thing where, you know, I think that we can say that these characters work together in the past that Harley’s been doing, you know, Suicide Squad missions for a while.”

The director continued, “We know Task Force X has, you know, existed for a while, and we don’t necessarily need to say all that stuff because then, if you say that’s Canon, we’re screwed.” His comments on whether Ayer’s Suicide Squad is canon or not stem from the 2016 film’s connection to other DCEU characters.

David Ayer’s Suicide Squad is full of DCEU references

Released in 2016, Ayer’s Suicide Squad follows a group of supervillains who are recruited by the government official Amanda Waller for a dangerous mission. The movie features Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Will Smith as Deadshot, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, and Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, among many more.

While some of these characters may be part of Gunn’s DCU, this movie is part of the DC Extended Universe, connecting its characters to a wider franchise. For instance, Ayer’s movie features Ben Affleck as Batman, establishing a connection to the DCEU’s version of Gotham City.

Moreover, making the 2016 movie canon to the new DCU would also raise questions about other characters like Joker, Deadshot, and Katana. That said, Gunn also acknowledged that he could bring some of these characters into his universe with a new storyline.
