Whether Wonder Man Is a Mutant Answered by Creator

Andrew Guest addressed one of the most discussed questions surrounding Marvel Studios’ Wonder Man following the release of the series. The showrunner explained why the creative team chose not to define Simon Williams’ origins by confirming whether the character is a mutant.

Wonder Man creator answers the mutant question about Simon

Marvel Studios officially discussed making Wonder Man a mutant in the MCU.

When asked by The Direct whether Simon Williams could be a mutant, showrunner Andrew Guest stated, “You know, it’s a very good question. And it’s one we discussed and it’s one we decided we weren’t going to answer. So I’ll leave it up to the people who make those kind of mutant questions.” He further confirmed the existence of a behind-the-scenes decision by saying, “It is,” when asked if an answer existed.

Guest explained the decision not to reveal Williams’ origin story, noting, “One of the things, we wanted to do was making sure that the powers for Simon Williams served his character.” He cited the original X-Men films as an inspiration, where powers felt psychological, and described Simon’s powers as “some part of him that sort of happened to him… They’re just really kind of a hindrance.”

Simon Williams’ powers in the Disney+ series remain undefined, aligning with Guest’s approach: “We didn’t do the first moment of seeing superpowers when he was a kid… I wanted to make sure that, when it came to these powers, that they weren’t what Simon was about.” Marvel Studios left his backstory deliberately vague.

In Marvel Comics, Simon Williams is not a mutant. Baron Zemo gave him his powers through ionic energy experiments. The MCU changed this origin. It cast Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Williams and portrayed him as a super-powered actor instead of an active superhero.

The series does not confirm him as a mutant. However, Wonder Man shows traits often linked to MCU mutants. His powers appeared during a traumatic childhood event. He views them as a burden rather than a gift. This mirrors themes seen in Ms. Marvel and Namor, who are the only confirmed mutants on Earth-616 so far.

The Wonder Man series is available for streaming on Disney+.
