Why Corlys Still Wants Rhaenyra as Queen Despite HOTD Season 3 Feud

Corlys Velaryon still backs Rhaenyra Targaryen’s claim to the Iron Throne. The Season 3 finale of House of the Dragon tested that loyalty, but Steve Toussaint reveals the Sea Snake hasn’t abandoned her yet.

After all, Rhaenyra now holds King’s Landing, yet her court splinters around her. Her Hand questions her decisions. Daemon rejects Corlys’ peace proposal outright. The Lord of Driftmark sailed away furious after she refused to legitimize his sons. Despite all this, Corlys returns to her side with genuine intent, though he doesn’t know what awaits him.

Steve Toussaint confirms why Corlys still wants Rhaenyra on the Iron Throne

Toussaint spoke with ScreenRant about Corlys’ state of mind following the Battle of Tumbleton. Specifically, what the character thinks of Rhaenyra’s rule after Daemon shot down peace terms from Gwayne and Daeron.

“I think at that stage, he still thinks that she can be persuaded to be a voice for reason,” Toussaint answered. He then pointed out a critical blind spot. Corlys left King’s Landing before Rhaenyra’s sister Helaena died. He missed the transformation that followed. “Now what he hasn’t seen, or what he’s unaware of, is that final scene at the end of that finale; she closes the shutter windows; to me that indicates that there’s a hardening to her. I think that the queen he encounters is not the one that he left.”

When asked if Corlys still has any faith in Rhaenyra to rule the realm as queen, Toussaint replied, “I think he has a little bit left, but there’s nowhere near what he had way back towards the middle and end of season one. He probably still thinks of her as a little girl who is in need of guidance from people who’ve been out there. I don’t think he thinks he’s gone too far to save her, but I do think his faith in her is diminishing.”

Further answering who Corlys believes should rule, Toussaint didn’t waver. “Despite my answer, I think he still thinks the realm would be better under Rhaenyra’s rule. The Rhaenyra that he thinks he knows.”

House of the Dragon Season 4 is confirmed, and then fans will see how it plays out.
