Spider-Man: Brand New Day brings back Jon Bernthal as the Punisher. The actor recently explained why Frank Castle plays an important role in Peter Parker’s journey and why his return matters.
Jon Bernthal explains why The Punisher is the key to Spider-Man: Brand New Day
Spider-Man: Brand New Day gives Peter Parker a fresh beginning. He spends more time as Spider-Man than as himself now. That lonely life becomes a big part of everything. In a MovieWeb interview, Destin Daniel Cretton explained Punisher’s role.
He said Frank Castle serves as a warning for Parker. Punisher knows the cost of living completely alone. Cretton said, “The way that Jon [Bernthal] plays him in our movie is, in a way, a warning to Peter, because he doesn’t necessarily want anybody to have the life that he has, and he does, at a point in the movie, tell Peter, ‘You don’t want my life,’ you know, you don’t want this existence. And he feels like he’s gone too far, and that there’s no turning back. But he doesn’t want the same thing for Peter.”
Jon Bernthal also shared why Frank thinks that way. He explained that Punisher has accepted his dark lifestyle already. However, he doesn’t want Peter making the same choices. Bernthal said, “There’s no light in Frank’s life. He knows it. It’s not a way to live. He’s not trying to escape it. He’s resigned to it, and he’s not necessarily trapped in the reeling downward cycle of darkness that he’s in.” Further, the actor stated, “But he’s not looking to get out of it. He’s fine to sort of pay that penance, but he also knows there’s no way to be, and and and and he knows that that’s no life.”
Bernthal explained Frank sees something different in Parker and doesn’t want him to follow his painful example. “He knows that this, you know, he sees that in this man, this is a man that has the capacity to love, and that there are people out there, and that if he’s no role model, he’s no person to follow.”
In Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which takes place a few years after No Way Home, Parker still protects New York completely alone now. Bernthal’s Punisher arrives to challenge Spider-Man’s moral limits. Their conflict could define Peter’s darkest MCU chapter yet. The film hits U.S. theaters this Friday, with several Marvel stars returning.
