Wyatt Russell Discusses John Walker’s Morality on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

Last Friday, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier concluded its series premiere by treating one of its namesake heroes to a bombshell revelation. In the episode’s final minutes, Sam Wilson watched in horror as a live TV broadcast introduced John Walker as the new Captain America, wielding the same iconic shield that Sam donated to the Smithsonian just a few days earlier. Presumably, John’s sudden appearance will play a big role in finally bringing Sam and Bucky Barnes together as reluctant partners. And according to Wyatt Russell, this is mainly because his character lacks Steve’s moral compass.

Russell discussed his role on the series in a new interview with USA Today. Judging by his remarks, it sounds like John’s not exactly a fan of playing by the rules.

“I don’t think there’s really been many MCU characters who’ve had quite the dilemma he’s had in terms of trying to fit into this sort of moralistic superhero world,” said Russell. “He’s been thrust into this role as Captain America and he’s going to do it his way, and he wants to do it right. But his way is a very specific way that he has learned through being basically a trained human hunter. I mean, that’s what Marines are. They’re not Steve Rogers, they’re not the same. They’re not like Boy Scouts anymore [and] they’re a little bit more gnarly.”

Walker’s actions will almost certainly build to a clash between him and the show’s title characters. However, he’ll have his own inner conflict to deal with as well.

“There’s always an element of reality (in the show) where it’s like, well, sometimes you need that guy, and it’s not always pretty,” continued Russell. “It’s fun to play those characters because they’re always at odds with themselves. They’re always at odds with their own abilities and with their own moral compass. They know what is right, kind of, but they also want to win and they battle with that.”

The second episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will premiere this Friday, March 26 on Disney+.
