Marvel Studios has already assembled the creative team for its upcoming X-Men reboot, with Jake Schreier directing and Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo writing the screenplay. As anticipation builds, longtime X-Men: The Animated Series executive producers Eric and Julia Lewald offered a clear message: don’t lose sight of what truly defines these characters.
Speaking to Collider, Julia Lewald said the mutants’ powers should never overshadow their emotional struggles. She explained that while abilities may grab attention, “the humanity inside” each character matters most. Julia noted that every mutant carries personal pain, yet they still choose to become “a found family,” arguing that this emotional bond has always been the franchise’s real superpower.
Eric Lewald shared that idea but aimed his advice directly at the filmmakers. During his conversation with Collider, he cautioned creatives against reinventing beloved heroes simply to leave a personal stamp on the franchise.
He said fans have spent decades growing up with these characters alongside parents and children, making authenticity far more valuable than dramatic reinventions. “People have lived with them. They watched with their parents, and now they’re watching with their children,” Lewald shared.
He also added that storytellers can challenge characters without changing who they fundamentally are. He stressed that audiences accept explosions and spectacle, but stories resonate only when they remain “true” to personalities like Rogue, Wolverine and Cyclops. In his view, character-first storytelling has always separated memorable X-Men stories from forgettable ones.
Marvel’s next X-Men film continues moving forward with Schreier behind the camera. Reports have linked Samara Weaving to Emma Frost, while Sadie Sink is reportedly expected to return as Jean Grey while Kit Connor will play Cyclops.
