Why Timothée Chalamet’s New Sci-Fi Movie Is Pivotal To His Long-Term Hollywood Stardom

Timothée Chalamet has a new sci-fi movie coming out next year. This movie could be a huge addition to his career and extend his stardom.

Chalamet has been cast alongside Selena Gomez in Not Alone, an animated alien movie from Illumination, the studio behind The Super Mario Bros. movies and the Despicable Me franchise.

In his animation debut, Chalamet will voice Joe, “an introverted rocket mechanic who lives a quiet life alone.” Gomez will play Fran, a “brilliant astro-botanist who is developing the world’s first-ever plant-fueled rocket.”

“When Joe and Fran are brought together to prepare for the inaugural launch of this revolutionary rocket, there are immediate sparks, but neither is particularly adept at romance,” the official synopsis reads. “Life becomes more complicated when three aliens — tiny, unruly and adorable — take refuge in Joe’s home. Dunk, Welly and Shirm are on the interplanetary run from a zealous-yet-inept officer of the law named Zandro. The aliens determine that Fran’s rocket could provide their means of getting back home to safety.”

Not Alone will be co-directed by Eric Guillon, Claire Dodgson, and Jonathan Del Val. The movie opens in theaters on April 16, 2027.

Why Not Alone could help Timothée Chalamet reach a new generation of moviegoers

Chalamet is arguably the biggest movie star under the age of 35. Chalamet’s career combines critical acclaim with box-office prowess. To be a true movie star, you need both. Chalamet is 30 and already has three Oscar nominations for Best Actor, and he has a global franchise that gives him international appeal in Dune. Chalamet can even open a movie on his name alone — Marty Supreme is the second-highest grossing movie in A24’s history ($191 million).

Chalamet has a significant following with older teenagers and adults. Now, he’s smartly adding an even younger audience to his repertoire. Chalamet proved he can be a star beloved by kids with Wonka, a musical fantasy film that grossed $634 million worldwide. A sequel is in development.

Chalamet will next court an even younger demographic with his animated movie. Grabbing an A-list star to be the voice of a potential animated franchise is nothing new. In fact, many stars before Chalamet have done it and reaped the benefits. Examples include Tom Hanks in Toy Story, Mike Myers in Shrek, Chris Pratt in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and Steve Carell and Kristen Wiig in Despicable Me.

Only one Not Alone movie has been announced. However, you can expect a sequel if it becomes a box office hit. Having a successful animated franchise on Chalamet’s resume will help prolong his star power for years to come.
