Robert Pattinson sees an unexpected connection between two very different roles. The actor says his new character reminds him of Twilight’s Jacob Black. Pattinson is revisiting the Twilight love triangle in the most unexpected way. While promoting Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, the actor explained that his latest character shares a surprising similarity with one of the franchise’s most memorable rivals.
Robert Pattinson compares his Odyssey role to Jacob from Twilight
Speaking with MTV UK, Pattinson said audiences may end up cheering for Antinous, one of Penelope’s suitors in The Odyssey. Laughing about the comparison, he said the role is “kind of like Jacob in Twilight.” Pattinson explained that Antinous is essentially trying to convince Penelope to move on from Odysseus, joking that his character’s attitude is, “It’s fine. He’s dead, get over it (via Deadline).”
Christopher Nolan’s adaptation follows Odysseus, played by Matt Damon, on his long journey home after the Trojan War. Anne Hathaway stars as Penelope, while Tom Holland plays their son, Telemachus.
Pattinson’s Antinous is among the men competing for Penelope’s hand and the throne of Ithaca while believing Odysseus will never return. The ensemble also includes Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Elliot Page and Mia Goth.
The comparison carries extra weight because Pattinson spent years on the opposite side of a similar love triangle. He rose to global fame as Edward Cullen in the Twilight saga, where Bella Swan found herself torn between Edward and Taylor Lautner’s Jacob Black across five blockbuster films. This time, Pattinson is stepping into the role of the rival instead of the leading romantic hero.
Since leaving Twilight behind, Robert Pattinson has built one of Hollywood’s most varied careers. He earned praise for films including The Lighthouse, Good Time and The Batman, while also receiving recognition for performances in independent dramas. With The Odyssey, he adds another ambitious project to his résumé, this time under Nolan’s direction, as the epic heads to theaters on July 17.
