Wile E. Coyote might be suing ACME Corporation, but he still found time for his fans. As the case of Coyote vs. Acme rages on, the part-time actor took to Reddit to host an AMA, where he answered some of the most burning questions that fans had.
One fan asked about his appearance in Space Jam. In the film, Wile E. wore a full basketball uniform. The question from Reddit user Browncoatdan read, “In Space Jam you wear basketball attire, so you clearly understand the concept of clothing, which means in this new movie you’re just freeballing it by choice. Why?”
For Wile E., however, it was obvious why he would not wear anything while he tried to catch the Road Runner. he simply answered: “Desert is hot.”
Looney Tunes has always treated clothing as a temporary costume
When it comes to Looney Tunes characters, clothing has never been a consistent part of their designs. There have been individual instances and entire periods in which the characters wore clothes, but their classic depictions generally show them without clothes.
Characters such as Daffy Duck, Bugs Bunny, and Wile E. Coyote have worn clothes as part of various gags, but they are usually depicted without clothes. Of course, if an argument is to be made about why they wear clothes to communicate gags, one could refer to the fact that the clothes tend to make it easier for audiences to recognize situations that are being played out. In these cases, the “clothes” are more like “costumes” rather than cloth used to cover nakedness.
Further, Wile E. Coyote’s explanation makes sense within the joke, even if it isn’t scientifically accurate. Coyotes would not be used to the American heat, given that it is not their native habitat. It would be completely sensible for Wile E. to not don a costume in the bustling heat, regardless of what fans say.
Coyote vs. Acme is currently playing in theaters.
