X-Men: Gambit Actor Picks MCU’s Next Remy LeBeau From Dune 2

The original voice of Gambit just named his dream pick for Marvel’s live-action X-Men reboot. The animated series veteran revealed his surprising casting choice and shared a personal connection to the role’s long Hollywood history.

Chris Potter picks the next Gambit after Channing Tatum

Chris Potter, the original voice of Gambit in X-Men: The Animated Series, endorsed Austin Butler to portray the card-throwing mutant in Marvel’s upcoming X-Men film, according to an exclusive Collider report.

Potter expressed his preference during a Tampa Bay Comic Con panel alongside Alyson Court and Adrian Hough. Collider’s Maggie Lovitt moderated the discussion. Potter transitioned from voicing Gambit in the original animated series to playing Cable in X-Men ’97. A.J. LoCascio took over the role of Gambit in the revival show.

“I really like Austin Butler, though. I could see him play a good Gambit. And I could play his grandfather,” Potter remarked during the event.

The voice actor also disclosed that he auditioned for the first live-action X-Men movie. He tried out for Cyclops but secretly hoped for a different part. “I was thinking: ‘I don’t even want to play this guy. I want to play Gambit,’” he shared. Potter felt confident the Cajun mutant would eventually join the franchise. “It just seemed like a slam dunk that Gambit would be in the second movie,” he noted.

Despite those expectations, Gambit stayed absent from Fox’s core X-Men trilogy. Taylor Kitsch briefly embodied the character in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Channing Tatum then stepped into the role for Deadpool & Wolverine. Marvel Studios confirmed Tatum’s Gambit will appear next in Avengers: Doomsday. The character featured prominently in the film’s recently released trailer.

Meanwhile, Marvel revealed a significant portion of its X-Men reboot cast at D23 this year. Inde Navarette landed Rogue, and Samara Weaving secured Emma Frost. Sadie Sink takes on Jean Grey, with Maya Boyd portraying Storm. Christopher Abbott plays Professor X, Kit Connor embodies Cyclops, and Adam Driver fills the role of Mister Sinister.
