Marvel fans have waited years to hear a comic-accurate Rogue on the big screen, and Inde Navarrette just gave them a one-word preview. The actor, riding high after her breakout in the indie horror hit Obsession, showcased her Southern drawl during a red-carpet interview at the Toronto International Film Festival and went straight for Rogue’s favorite word.
Inde Navarrette teases her Rogue accent for X-Men reboot
Speaking with etalkCTV before a TIFF panel on Obsession, Navarrette was asked to demonstrate the accent she’ll use in Marvel Studios’ upcoming X-Men film. Her answer: “Sugar.” That single word means something to fans. Lenore Zann’s vocal performance in X-Men: The Animated Series and X-Men ’97 remains the yardstick for many fans, while Anna Paquin largely dropped Rogue’s Southern characterization in Fox’s 2000 film and its sequels. Navarrette therefore becomes the first live-action actor to fully commit to the character’s Mississippi roots and the first to face direct comparison with Zann.
The pressure extends beyond the accent itself. Some fans had championed other actresses for the part, including Alien: Romulus star Cailee Spaeny, and a segment of the audience will insist Navarrette won the role on the strength of her Obsession stardom rather than her acting skill. That skepticism will trail every line she delivers as Rogue, beginning with the “Sugar” heard around the red carpet.
Kevin Feige revealed the Rogue casting on August 14 at Disney’s D23 convention in Anaheim, California. Jake Schreier directs, with Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo writing the script. Reports indicate Navarrette beat out several established actors for the part. Now, she joins Sadie Sink (Jean Grey), Kit Connor (Cyclops), Christopher Abbott (Professor Charles Xavier), Maya Boyd (Storm), Samara Weaving (Emma Frost), Asa Germann (Angel), and Adam Driver as Nathaniel Milbury, aka Mister Sinister. Unconfirmed rumors place Beast and Iceman in the cast as well.
X-Men opens in theaters on May 5, 2028.
