Medusa Live-Action Movie in the Works at Disney, Dwayne Johnson Involvement Revealed

Disney is developing an original live-action movie about Medusa, the snake-haired figure from Greek mythology. The film is currently in development, with a writer and several producers attached.

Michael Montemayor is writing the first draft of the original live-action movie, Deadline reports. Dwayne Johnson is producing the project through Seven Bucks Productions alongside partners Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia, with Melissa Fried overseeing the project for the label.

Matt Smith is also producing through Electro Corduroy Entertainment. As of now, Johnson is not attached to feature in the film.

Medusa is one of three Gorgons in Greek mythology, and her gaze turned anyone who met it to stone. She was beheaded by the hero Perseus. He later gave her head to the goddess Athena to place on her shield.

How Dwayne Johnson’s Seven Bucks is bringing Medusa to Disney

Seven Bucks is developing the project under its existing deal with Disney. The movie will explore a new interpretation of the Greek mythological figure, though specific details about Montemayor’s approach remain under wraps.

The project is still in its early stages, and it could take some time before it moves into production, with casting and further creative details yet to be announced.

The upcoming movie marks another collaboration between Disney and Seven Bucks Productions, which previously worked together on Jungle Cruise. Co-produced by Seven Bucks, Jumanji: Open World is scheduled to hit theaters on December 25. The previous two Jumanji movies starring Johnson earned a combined $1.7 billion worldwide.

However, this time it will face tough competition from Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part III, two major blockbusters arriving a week before its release.

Montemayor also serves as a co-writer for Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of Tangled. His other upcoming projects, per IMDB, are Court Date and Stepsisters.

Disney has yet to officially comment on the Medusa report. If greenlit, the project will add to the studio’s extensive slate of live-action adaptations drawn from classic folklore and legendary tales.
