Alexander Skarsgård’s 2016 action-adventure movie has unexpectedly climbed to the top of HBO Max’s worldwide movie rankings, nearly a decade after its theatrical release. The Legend of Tarzan arrived on the platform in select regions on November 6, 2026, and quickly claimed the No. 1 position.
According to FlixPatrol, The Legend of Tarzan became the most-watched movie on HBO Max worldwide and reached No. 1 in 19 countries. The film is not currently available on HBO Max in the United States, but viewers can find it on Tubi.
The streaming success comes as Skarsgård attracts attention for his recent and upcoming projects, including Wicker. The romantic fantasy stars him alongside Olivia Colman, Peter Dinklage, and Elizabeth Debicki. It follows a fisherwoman who orders a wicker husband after growing frustrated with her narrow-minded neighbors.
What did critics think of Alexander Skarsgård’s The Legend of Tarzan movie?
Directed by David Yates, The Legend of Tarzan offers a different take on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ famous character. Rather than retelling Tarzan’s origin, the 2016 film begins years after John Clayton, played by Skarsgård, has left the African jungle and settled in England with his wife, Jane, portrayed by Margot Robbie.
On Rotten Tomatoes, The Legend of Tarzan currently has a 35% critics score and a 58% audience score. ScreenRant’s Sandy Schaefer argued that the film had the ingredients for a strong Tarzan adventure but was too overstuffed to deliver. He wrote, “There’s a great Tarzan adventure somewhere in Legend of Tarzan, but the movie is too overstuffed and rough around the edges to fly high.” New York Magazine/Vulture’s David Edelstein also criticized its screenplay, writing, “The new Tarzan film, The Legend of Tarzan, plays as if a dog ate part of the script.”
The film’s theatrical performance was underwhelming. It grossed around $356.7 million worldwide, while the production budget was reported to be $180 million. Industry estimates indicated that it needed approximately $400 million to break even, and financial analysts suggested that Warner Bros. incurred a loss of about $40 million.
