The DCEU is going out with a bang as Jason Momoa’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has topped the list of December’s must-see movies.
The highly-anticipated DC film topped Whip Media’s Movie Anticipation Report, capturing the most excitement from moviegoers based on data tracked in Whip Media’s TV Time app.
With over 26 million global registered users, the app tapped into audience demand, showing Aquaman 2 as the #1 most eagerly awaited movie coming out in December.
Coming in second place is Wonka, a musical unveiling Willy Wonka’s early days. Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp previously played the quirky chocolate factory owner, but this film stars Timothée Chalamet as the young upstart candy maker.
And sci-fi epic Rebel Moon rockets into the third spot for most eagerly awaited December debuts. Directed by Zack Snyder for Netflix, this galactic tale will get a limited theatrical release before streaming. But Snyder already has big plans for the property as a far-reaching film franchise. The first sequel arrives in April, promising an expanding onscreen universe for audiences to explore.
Jason Momoa suits back up alongside returning co-stars Patrick Wilson, Amber Heard, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Nicole Kidman for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Director James Wan, known for horror smashes like Saw and The Conjuring, directs the sequel which expands on 2018’s Aquaman and the aquatic superhero’s cinematic universe.
The End of the DCEU
This marks the final chapter in the current DC Extended Universe storyline. In the new film, Momoa’s Aquaman confronts new villains and revelations that push his otherworldly abilities to even greater depths across startling new terrain. Aquaman 2 promises to build out the oceans of lore first revealed in Wan’s initial outing, upping the stakes for the trident-wielding hero.
The official synopsis for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is as follows:
Having failed to defeat Aquaman the first time, Black Manta, still driven by the need to avenge his father’s death, will stop at nothing to take Aquaman down once and for all. This time Black Manta is more formidable than ever before, wielding the power of the mythic Black Trident, which unleashes an ancient and malevolent force. To defeat him, Aquaman will turn to his imprisoned brother Orm, the former King of Atlantis, to forge an unlikely alliance. Together, they must set aside their differences in order to protect their kingdom and save Aquaman’s family, and the world, from irreversible destruction.
