Drax Creator Jim Starlin Says Role Can Be Recast After Dave Bautista

Jim Starlin, creator of Drax the Destroyer said another actor could take over the role after Dave Bautista.

The Guardians of the Galaxy are set to make their return in the upcoming films Thor: Love and Thunder and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and fans couldn’t be more excited to reunite with one of Marvel’s most beloved teams. One of the breakout characters from the group was Drax the Destroyer, played excellently by Dave Bautista. Critics and fans alike have praised Dave Bautista’s performance as the character, highlighting his impeccable comedic timing as well as his chemistry with his co-stars.

But the future of the characters after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 remains a mystery, with many predicting that it will be the final outing for these oddball characters that writer/director James Gunn helped introduce to a mainstream audience. But given the characters’ popularity, where could the future lead them?

In an interview with Inverse, Jim Starlin discussed the future of the cosmic side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and briefly touched upon where he thinks Dave Bautista’s Drax could go, even if the actor no longer wants to portray the role after finishing work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. You can read Jim Starlin’s comments down below:

“The Marvel Universe is going to keep trucking along and they found that they have made money on cosmic stuff. So they will more than likely are going to do more of it. There may be another Drax down the line; somebody else who hopefully has half the comedic timing of Bautista.”

While Jim Starlin admits that he believes another Drax actor could come down the line, he also expresses that it will be tough to follow in the footsteps of Dave Bautista. After all, getting cast in the role really catapulted him into a new level of superstardom that has given him big roles in films such as Spectre, Blade Runner 2049, Army of the Dead and the upcoming sequel to Knives Out.

Do you agree with Jim Starlin? Will we see another actor play Drax down the line? Do you prefer for Dave Bautista to renew his contract if the character stays alive after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3? Sound off in the comments below.

Dave Bautista will return to the MCU in Thor: Love and Thunder Full details on the plot are currently being kept under lock and key, though the film will be partly based on Jason Aaron’s Mighty Thor comic book run, in which Jane Foster becomes the new Thor. Directed by Taika Waititi from a script he co-wrote with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, Love and Thunder stars Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, Natalie Portman, and Christian Bale.

Thor: Love and Thunder is set to be released on May 6, 2022. Be sure to continue following us for all the latest news on Dave Bautista, Thor: Love and Thunder, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content!
