Gal Gadot’s ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ Tops Christmas Nielsen Ratings

Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman 1984 topped the Christmas 2020 Nielsen ratings after Warner Bros. called for a second review.

After the Nielsen ratings over the holidays proclaimed that Disney’s Soul was the most popular release over the December 21-27 week, WarnerMedia questioned whether those results were accurate since Wonder Woman 1984 seemed to be a hit over Christmas. Following a joint review of the results from Nielsen Media Research and WarnerMedia, the two companies quickly discovered that the Gal Gadot sequel outperformed Soul by 35%.

The Nielsen data shows that Wonder Woman 1984 accumulated 2.3 billion minutes of viewing time, which means a lot of fans watched Diana Prince’s sequel. Estimates suggest it was watched 14.9 million times. It’s disappointing the film didn’t get a theatrical release, but when speaking to Variety – HBO Max EVP and GM Andy Forsell explained the company is pleased it could provide plenty of entertainment over the holidays.

“As was announced on Wednesday during our earnings and as this Nielsen data shows, [Wonder Woman 1984] was a huge holiday gift to the consumer at a time when they wanted and needed it. This partnership with Warner Bros. of course continues throughout the year but it began with Wonder Woman’s arrival on Christmas Day to great success.”
