James Gunn Reveals First Image From John Cena’s ‘Peacemaker’ Series

James Gunn has shared the first look at John Cena’s Peacemaker series.

After blowing fans away with his narcissistic brand of patriotism in The Suicide Squad, John Cena is set to return as Peacemaker in his own solo HBO Max series. The show, written by James Gunn, will hit the streaming service this upcoming January. Details on the show are slim for now, though a first trailer is expected to drop at next month’s DC Fandome.

The series is set after the events of The Suicide Squad.

Spoilers ahead for The Suicide Squad.

In The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker seemingly perished at the hands of Idris Elba’s Bloodsport, only to be resurrected in the film’s second post-credits sequence. The John Cena-led series is set to focus on the character going on a series of missions with the same internal crew from James Gunn’s film.

The director took to Twitter to share the first look at the series, as well as the crew that comprises of Peacemaker’s internal team.

In the post-credits sequence for The Suicide Squad, Steve Agee and Jennifer Holland check in on the character. Now, they’re back for his solo series, alongside Chukwudi Iwuji, Freddie Stroma, and Danielle Brooks.

Here is the synopsis for The Suicide Squad:

Welcome to hell—a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and-destroy mission, with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. And as always, one wrong move and they’re dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself). If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them—all of them.

Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Sylvester Stallone, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Peter Capaldi, David Dastmalchian, Daniela Melchior, Michael Rooker, Pete Davidson, Nathan Fillion, Sean Gunn, Flula Borg, Mayling Ng, Tinashe Kajese, Steve Agee, Jennifer Holland, Alice Braga, Juan Diego Botto, Joaquin Cosio, Storm Reid, and Taika Waititi.
