Netflix’s ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Adds Daniel Dae Kim As Firelord Ozai

Daniel Dae Kim has been cast as Firelord Ozai in Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series.

The cast of Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender continues to grow as the series nears principal photography. We’ve known since August that Gordon Cormier will play Aang, Kiawentiio has been cast as Katara, Ian Ousley is set to play Sokka, and Shang-Chi star Dallas Liu will portray Zuko. Now, another significant role has been cast with Daniel Dae Kim on board as Firelord Ozai. Kim already has a history with the franchise, having voiced General Fong in one episode of the original animated series and Hiroshi Sato in The Legend of Korra.

Firelord Ozai is the father of Zuko and the overarching villain of Avatar: The Last Airbender. In the original series, we don’t see Firelord Ozai’s face until season three. With Daniel Dae Kim cast in the role, there’s a chance we will see his face early on as we did with Cliff Curtis’ portrayal of the character in M. Night Shyamalan’s film. Firelord Ozai was originally voiced by Star Wars legend Mark Hamill in the animated series.

Netflix’s upcoming live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series is being developed by Albert Kim after the show’s original creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko exited the project. Dan Lin, Lindsey Liberatore, and Michael Goi are on the series as executive producers, with Goi directing episodes alongside Roseanne Liang and Jabbar Raisani.

Here is the synopsis for the original Avatar: The Last Airbender series:

With the Fire Nation on the brink of global domination, a young girl and her brother discover a 12-year old Airbender who reveals himself as the Avatar. Will this irresponsible kid accept his destiny in time to save the world?

Created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the animated series featured the voicing talents of Zach Tyler Eisen, Mae Whitman, Jack DeSena, Dante Basco, Jessie Flower, Dee Bradley Baker, Mako, Greg Baldwin, Grey DeLisle, and Mark Hamill.
