A line relating to Batman was almost censored from the John Cena DC Extended Universe series Peacemaker.
Continuing in the same fashion he did with his DC Extended Universe film The Suicide Squad, James Gunn returns with an original HBO Max series, Peacemaker. The series, which stars John Cena as Christopher Smith, features the same irreverent comedy that the 2021 film had, and showcases some interesting references to the broader lore of DC Comics, much of which is portrayed with the titular character’s juvenile sense of humor.
In Peacemaker, we see John Cena express some disdain for perhaps DC Comics’ most popular character, Batman. In fact, he specifically refers to Batman as a “p—y.” Even though both the character and James Gunn are known for their irreverence, this line initially rubbed the higher-ups at DC the wrong way.
In an interview with TV Line, James Gunn revealed that he was surprised that DC initially didn’t approve of this Peacemaker line regarding Batman:
“I was very surprised, because they were not too fond of Peacemaker calling Batman a p—y. I’m like, ‘But he talks about all these other terrible things about all these other superheroes that are much worse than calling Batman a p—y.’ Not only that, Batman is the only one he makes a fair point about; everybody else he’s really just believing stuff that he read on the Internet. Everything that he believes is kind of nonsense, and Batman is the only one [he] has a point of view on that makes any sense whatsoever. They let me get away with what I got away with at the end of the day… I don’t know. You’d have to ask them. I don’t know why him calling Batman a p—y is potentially more offensive than him saying Superman [has a poop fetish]. I don’t understand why one was brought up and one wasn’t.”
James Gunn jumped over to the DC Extended Universe following his brief firing from the director’s chair of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which he is currently working on as we speak. Upon writing/directing The Suicide Squad and now bringing the first season of John Cena’s Peacemaker to HBO Max, it’s clear that the DC team gives him more creative freedom to express his irreverent sense of humor that you see only hints of in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

PEACEMAKER explores the continuing story of the character that John Cena reprises in the aftermath of executive producer James Gunn’s 2021 film The Suicide Squad – a compellingly vainglorious man who believes in peace at any cost, no matter how many people he has to kill to get it!
Peacemaker was created by James Gunn, who wrote all the episodes and directed five of them. The first season of the HBO Max series will consist of eight episodes, with Brad Anderson, Jody Hill, and Rosemary Rodriguez also directing episodes. Clint Mansell and Kevin Kiner will compose the score.
