Spider-Man: No Way Home writers Erik Sommers and Chris McKenna opened up about how the film connects to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Loki.
Now that Spider-Man: No Way Home is out, fans have been dissecting how it fits into the other Marvel projects that have both been released and are on their way to cinemas. It’s already known that the Spider-Man threequel directly feeds into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which debuted its first trailer as the Spidey’s film’s post-credits scene.
Speaking with The Wrap, Chris McKenna discussed how the Spider-Man film relates to both Loki and the Doctor Strange sequel, two projects that focus on the multiverse. As the production on the Spidey threequel evolved, so did its relation with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
“When we started breaking the story and even started writing the script, we followed Doctor Strange 2 in the timeline. So then during pre-production, things got pushed and changed. We were supposed to start shooting in July of 2020 and it became November of 2020, our release date got pushed from July 2021 to December 2021 – there were a lot of things flipping around.”
“Originally we were writing this where Strange was gonna be involved but it was after the events of Doctor Strange 2, and so where is he where is his head, and so that’s something that we were kicking around. And then now it seems to be more of like, ‘Oh this actually gets him interested in pursuing the multiverse as a concept.’”
Co-writer Erik Sommers then continued by discussing how the season finale of Loki, which saw the multiverse opening up, wasn’t planned alongside Spider-Man: No Way Home. However, the events of the Loki happened to work in the favor of the Spidey team and in turn, audiences.
“We were already down this road when that Loki finale happened. We all felt like, this really helps. This is great because it shows that there is trouble in the multiverse.”
Chris McKenna then revealed he’s uncertain if Doctor Strange casting the spell in Spider-Man: No Way Home lines up with the multiverse opening up in the Loki finale. Fans have been adamant that such is the case but it looks like it’s unknown at this point if the Loki events feed into the Spidey threequel.
“Whether certain things that were happening in Loki line up in terms of the timeline exploding and is that the same time that Doctor Strange is casting the spell, I don’t know. There is, I’m sure, the Marvel talking points to that. But we were aware of a lot of the different things that were going on, and could we draw on those, how it would be affected by this thing, but ultimately we had our own giant story bear to wrestle with.”
