DC’s 2026 Pride Event Is Its Best Yet for 1 Simple Reason

One simple change makes Justice League: Dream Girls – A DC Pride Event the best special the publisher has ever released for Pride Month. Since 2021, DC has annually printed at least one special highlighting their LGBTQIA+ characters and creators. However, the latest comic series is easily its strongest to date because one minor change.

DC's 2026 Pride Event Is Its Best Yet for 1 Simple Reason

In previous years, the DC Pride line presented yearly anthologies as well as other specials and graphic novels. 2021, for instance, saw the publication of a miniseries teaming Lobo and his lesbian daughter, Crush, as well as the standalone graphic novel Poison Ivy: Thorns.

The entire line has consistently sold well and seen critical acclaimed, winning both the Eisner and Ringo Awards. However, the anthologies have drawn criticism from some for the gap in quality between the stories and for the lack of connection within the collection beyond characters’ sexualities. The stories have also varied wildly between comedic tales and serious examinations of current events.

Things shifted slightly with the 2025 DC Pride Event. While still an anthology, the stories were framed together by a gay bar in Gotham City. This helped address the complaints of the previous specials feeling scattershot, but the issues with tonal shift between chapters remained.

DC’s Justice League: Dream Girls tells a single story

The 2026 DC Pride Event addresses this by primarily focusing upon a single story. Additionally, that story is being spread out across four issues released weekly across June 2026. While each issue also includes an unrelated back-up story, the focus is on Dreamer and Galaxy. Indeed, Justice League: Dream Girls is a direct sequel to the 2026 Justice League Intergalactic Special. That one-shot also featured Galaxy and Dreamer and was also written by Nicole Maines and Jadzia Axelrod.

The story finds Dreamer and Galaxy under psychic assault by the villain known as The Key. His goals are unclear, but involve confusing Dreamer and manipulating her into accessing a secret within the Dream Realm. This results in a series of vignettes, with Dreamer and Galaxy being “reborn” in different worlds depicted by different art teams.

This includes a reality where the heroes are Amazons, drawn by Wonder Woman artist Nicola Scott. Another, with art by Brave and the Bold artist J. Bone, depicts Dreamer as Batgirl and Galaxy as Supergirl. The end result is more cohesive than previous DC Pride books. It is also more friendly to new readers, despite being tied to earlier comics.
