Henry Cavill’s Sherlock & Moriarty’s Future Explained After Enola Holmes 3’s Shock Ending

The future of Henry Cavill’s detective and his greatest adversary, aka Moriarty, hangs in the balance after a dramatic climax in Enola Holmes 3. Sherlock Holmes nearly crossed a line, leaving fans wondering about the Netflix movie’s ending. Now, finally, the director and actors have given their take on it.

Enola Holmes 3 director explains Enola Holmes 3 ending with Sherlock

The ending of Enola Holmes 3 shows Moriarty, played by Sharon Duncan-Brewster, kidnapping Sherlock. His sister, Enola, played by Millie Bobby Brown, races to save him, and soon after a lot of fighting and trickery, Sherlock ends up holding a gun to the criminal mastermind’s head.

He almost pulled the trigger, a moment of raw anger that had never been seen before, and Enola had to talk him down from it. Director Philip Barantini has now revealed he wanted audiences to genuinely believe Henry Cavill’s Sherlock might do the unthinkable.

“I wanted him to hold the gun there for so long, because I wanted the audience to be like, ‘Is he going to do this? Is he not?” Barantini told ScreenRant. The director confirmed his personal wish to see the detective fire the weapon. “I definitely wanted to see him pull the trigger.” The scene instead becomes a study in vulnerability. “We’ve never seen Sherlock like that before, losing his temper a little bit but also showing his vulnerable side,” he added.

Sharon Duncan-Brewster, however, admits a personal desire to see the trigger pulled, purely to witness the fallout. “Yes, because I’d be intrigued to find out how Moriarty would have gotten out of it, because that’s what she does…She’s so elusive,” she explained. The actor craved exploring a version of events where Sherlock unleashes his dark side. Yet she concedes this is exactly why the character refrained.

Lady Tewkesbury ultimately knocks Moriarty unconscious. But the villain’s final fate remains deliberately ambiguous. Duncan-Brewster is hopeful for a resurrection, eyeing a return for Enola Holmes 4. “I do think there’s scope for her to come back. I’d love to play her again,” she said.

Unlike classic adaptations where Holmes and Moriarty are entrenched enemies, the Enola Holmes franchise is charting their origin story.
