Jon Favreau Is Relieved The Mandalorian Season 2 Finale Wasn’t Spoiled

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for The Mandalorian season 2 finale! If you haven’t seen it yet, what are you waiting for?!

Prior to The Mandalorian season 2 premiere, almost all of the surprise appearances were spoiled, including Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano. Fortunately, Mark Hamill’s return as Luke Skywalker remained a secret. While appearing on Good Morning America, showrunner and series creator Jon Favreau expressed his relief and surprise that it wasn’t spoiled.

“It was very tricky because it’s very hard to keep a secret nowadays,” said Favreau. “Especially with Star Wars because people are so curious about it…We were so scared right up until it aired that our surprise cameo was gonna leak too.”

“We started off the whole series with the Baby Yoda reveal,” added Favreau. “Part of that is not telling too many people. [And] not having merchandise that’s being tooled up and announced and everything….Having Mark Hamill actually on set filming and us using whatever technology we had available to de-age him and try to make him look as much like he did in the old films.”

Hamill also weighed in on his appearance over the weekend. However, it’s unclear if Luke’s return will be a one-off appearance or an open door for more. Regardless, it greatly expanded the reach of The Mandalorian and its upcoming spinoffs. It may be only a matter of time before more original trilogy characters make a comeback. Perhaps even prequel trilogy characters as well.

All eight episodes of The Mandalorian season 2 are currently streaming on Disney+.
