Monsters Inc. 2’s Scrapped Script Married Off a Fan-Favorite Pixar Character

A scrapped script for Monsters, Inc. 2 featured a beloved character getting married. Since the original film’s release in 2001, many fans have been hoping for a direct sequel.

Which Pixar character was going to be married in Monsters Inc. 2?

Speaking with TheWrap, the writers of the Monsters, Inc. 2 script, Bob Hilgenberg and Rob Muir, revealed that their canceled sequel was going to feature some interesting character arcs. In the Inc. 2 script, titled Lost in Scaradise, fan-favorite character Mike was going to get married. Additionally, Sulley was shown receiving a promotion at the company. The story also had an older Boo returning to the monster world to reunite with the monsters who had once protected her.

“We stand by that script, we’re very proud of it. It’s one of those things where, when we were writing it, everything was falling into place. It was a labor of love and were very passionate about it,” said Muir.

He added, “We wanted to make sure we stuck with the Pixar brand. Our goal was, when somebody read the script, to not know if we were influenced by Pixar or not.”

Following the first Monsters, Inc. movie’s success, which made over $560 million against a budget of $115 million, Disney wanted to develop a sequel with Pixar. Back then, these two were separate companies.

Internal issues then led to a major conflict, resulting in Disney launching its own animation studio, Circle 7. Hilgenberg and Muir were then brought on to write the script for Monsters, Inc. 2. However, Disney canceled the plans for a sequel once it acquired Pixar and Circle 7 collapsed. As a result, the original Monsters, Inc. 2 script was shelved.

Hilgenberg and Muir said they would still like to see elements of their script considered for a future installment. “Call Pixar, tell them to make our version. Show up with signs – Bob and Rob’s draft!”

Earlier this year, it was revealed that a true Monsters, Inc. sequel is reportedly in the works at Disney and Pixar. However, it has reportedly been referred to as Monsters, Inc. 3, although Disney has not confirmed a title.
