Note From the Editor: For this week”s column, Superhero Hype’s cosplay correspondent, Ashlynne Dae, is revisiting one of the all-time great anti-heroines of comics: Catwoman! Selina Kyle has been around almost as long as Batman, and she’s also been a heroine, a villain, and everything in-between. Additionally, Catwoman has had several different costumes over the decades. This particular incarnation was inspired by more than one source.
I’ve been cosplaying Catwoman for years. I have done a couple different versions of her and wore my last catsuit to death!
I decided that I wanted to revisit Selina and make a new catsuit based off a mix of a few of her newer designs.
And I knew I wanted to add some more visual interest than just normal side seams.
All of that black can get lost in moody lighting, so texture or 3D design elements can help with that.
I added some felled Princess seams on the front and back, and that also helps with getting a figure hugging fit.
Then I used black stretch pleather (my favorite material to work with) for a sleek look to sew up this cat suit.
I added some pops with shiny patent gloves and thigh high boots so that all the dark material wouldn’t blend together and get lost.
It’s also a callback to her Batman: The Animated Series look where she sports a grey catsuit, black gloves, and boots.
Catwoman has been one of my most favorite Batman characters since I was a wee girl watching the Tim Burton version in Batman Returns.
Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman is still my favorite version and one I have also cosplayed before. I’ve really got to shoot that set sometime too!
I also really love cats and have a little hairless feline friend of my own. You may have seen him in some of my previous progress photos. He loves to help.
While I could only wish I had the catlike reflexes and grace Selina has, I definitely love to channel her bad girl energy when I can!
