With the recent casting of Anya Taylor-Joy, it seems like Warner Bros. Pictures will continue to enlist big stars for its Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum movie. So far, they’ve already tapped four returning cast members and four newcomers to the LOTR franchise. The highly anticipated prequel is scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 17, 2027.
Confirmed The Hunt for Gollum cast
Besides Taylor-Joy, Jamie Dornan (Belfast), Kate Winslet (Avatar: The Way of Water), and Leo Woodall (One Day) have also been cast to join the new Lord of the Rings movie, which will be directed by Andy Serkis. Since the film will take place years before the events of the original trilogy, Dornan is set to play a younger version of Aragorn, who’ll also be called a Strider in the new prequel. The iconic character was originally played by Viggo Mortensen, who has declined to reprise the role. In a previous interview, Serkis shared that Mortensen was actually “thrilled” about the Aragorn recasting.
As for Taylor-Joy, Winslet, and Woodall, they will be portraying the respective roles of Seren, Marigol, and Halvard. These are original new characters that don’t exist in J.R.R. Tolkien’s original books and will be introduced in The Hunt for Gollum for the first time.
They will be joined by returning LOTR franchise stars Serkis, Ian McKellen, Elijah Wood, and Lee Pace. Serkis’ Gollum/Sméagol, McKellen’s Gandalf, and Wood’s Frodo Baggins have appeared in both the original trilogy and The Hobbit trilogy, with the X-Men vet being the only cast member to star as a major character in all six movies. Meanwhile, Pace will be reprising his role as King Thranduil, the Elven King of Mirkwood. The character made its live-action debut in The Hobbit movies, but was first mentioned in 2001’s The Fellowship of the Ring as the father of Legolas.
Unconfirmed LOTR cast who could return
Ahead of The Hunt for Gollum’s production start, we might get more casting announcements for the project soon. Since Orlando Bloom’s Legolas, Cate Blanchett’s Galadriel, and Hugo Weaving’s Elrond had previously appeared in both LOTR trilogies, it’s most likely that the studio might also be planning to bring them back. At the moment, there’s still no word about their potential involvement. However, given Bloom’s previous interest in returning to the franchise, it won’t be a surprise if he indeed makes an appearance in the new prequel movie.
