Star Wars Battlefront III Is EA’s Next Big Move, Despite One Big Catch

Electronic Arts‘ recent BioWare shutdown has concerned Star Wars. BioWare is responsible for some of the most iconic modern gaming franchises. Mass Effect and Dragon Age are among them.

According to the sources, EA shut down BioWare because of an opportunity that it received from Lucasfilm. It was to develop a third Star Wars Battlefront game. The closure of BioWare is also attributed to EA’s recent leveraged buyout, which is the largest deal of its kind on record.

The executives heading the deal allegedly looked at what EA has in store for the future. Both Star Wars and Mass Effect were potent moneymaking candidates. However, with several Star Wars projects slated for the coming years, the studio chose to invest there, leaving Mass Effect in the dust.

Why EA is looking to Star Wars Battlefront III instead of Mass Effect

Although Star Wars Battlefront III never entered development, EA chose the franchise over Mass Effect as its path forward. EA has historically found shooters more lucrative than RPGs, and Star Wars carries a widely recognized brand name. Star Wars Battlefront III is a long-anticipated title for fans, but information about the project has been scarce.

BioWare’s shutdown happened after several underperforming projects, including Mass Effect: Andromeda, Anthem, and Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Regarding the closure, an EA spokesperson said, “While this is never easy, we ultimately have to make tough decisions to focus our teams on the biggest opportunities for our future, including investing in new projects across our portfolio.” No specifics about the decision were revealed.

No details have been revealed about Star Wars: Battlefront III either. The last installment of the franchise was released in 2017. No date has yet been set for Battlefront III.
