Godzilla Minus One Director’s First English Movie Reveals Cast With Spider-Man Villain Actor

Takashi Yamazaki parlayed the staggering success of Godzilla Minus One into a historic Oscar win and a ticket to Hollywood. Now, the Japanese filmmaker has found the trio of performers who will headline his first English-language feature.

Grandgear cast includes Paul Giamatti and two more

Sam Nivola and Nico Parker will lead Grandgear, with Paul Giamatti in negotiations to board the project, per Deadline. Yamazaki directs from an original script he wrote himself. J.J. Abrams produces via Bad Robot alongside Glen Zipper. The story stays under wraps for now, and cameras should roll in 2027.

In detail, Giamatti, whom audiences know as the Rhino from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, was the filmmakers’ coveted pick for his part. Landing the two biggest roles took far more work. Yamazaki put candidates through a rigorous round of chemistry tests before handing the parts to Nivola and Parker.

The former got critical praise for The White Lotus and will next appear in Hulu’s Phony opposite Connie Britton. His film work includes White Noise and Maestro. The latter took Sundance’s Breakthrough Performance Award for Suncoast and a BAFTA nomination for The Last of Us. She also plays the female lead in the live-action How to Train Your Dragon.

Yamazaki wrote, directed, and supervised the visual effects on Godzilla Minus One, which made him the first director since Stanley Kubrick to win an Oscar for Best Visual Effects. That film’s follow-up, Godzilla Minus Zero, just premiered at the New York Film Festival. It reaches IMAX screens on November 3 and opens wide on November 6.

All in all, the Godzilla Minus One filmmaker clearly isn’t slowing down. Between a monster sequel and his first studio picture, Yamazaki has positioned himself as one of the most in-demand directors working today. Fans now just have to wait to catch a glimpse of his vision for Grandgear.
